5 Ways to Improve Your Home Security

March 4, 2021 · Andrew · Leave a Comment

In the age of technology, home security has obviously advanced significantly over the past few years in parallel to other devices and gadgets. However, improving your home security doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Here are 5 ways you can improve your home security.

1. Intruder Alarms

In 2019/20, only 29% of UK households reported to have burglary alarms, down 3% since 2016/17. However, intruder alarms can be extremely beneficial to your home security.

Recommended intruder alarm installers can implement a system which is monitored 24 hours a day to an alarm receiving station. This means that if your alarm is triggered, your designated keyholder and local police can be informed immediately if required.

2. CCTV Surveillance

One study found that the number of break-ins decreased during UK lockdown, showing that your home has been more secure whilst you’ve been stuck at home.

As society starts to reopen and go back to normal, you can replicate this all-seeing effect using CCTV. CCTV installers Newcastle can design, install, commission, and maintain a CCTV surveillance system to suit all requirements for your home.

3. Motion Activated Lighting

Motion activated lights in your garden or yard can be a great way to deter any potential break ins. This is because a sudden spotlight on someone can cause enough of a scare of being caught that they may just give up.

Motion activated lighting is most effective when used in conjunction with other home security systems. For example, motion activated lighting can enhance your CCTV surveillance, as it will help to show a clear picture of any suspect, even in the darkest corners of your yard.

4. Check the integrity of your locks

Its not just the case of making sure your doors and windows are locked at night, but regular maintenance checks should be carried out to make sure that they still perform properly.

Old or rusted locks on garages and front doors may need replacing, as they might be easier to break open. Avoid doors where there is glass near the handle, as this may be another way to take the lock out of action. And most importantly, never leave you key in the lock or hide a spare key under a plant pot.

5. Use common sense

When it comes to improving your home security, the best thing that you can do is to apply your common sense. Don’t leave your valuables in plain sight for the world to see them. Instead, lock jewellery away or keep it close to your person.

If you have game consoles in your living room, then make sure to shut the curtains at night so that you aren’t advertising the goods you have inside. This applies to the second floor of your home too, as this is often overlooked as a point of entry.

Overall, by applying these tips to your home, you will be certain to improve your home security, and might even save a bit of money on your home insurance in the process. After all, it is better to be safe than sorry.
